Hello. Is anyone out there still? Two years does seem like a long time doesn't it? Again, I seem to be back at trying to do what I've always liked doing. But I can't seem to draw studentssketchpad anymore. I'm no longer connected to the schooling system like I used to and I can no longer garner sufficient inspiration. Studentssketchpad was an attempt to make people come to terms with their own school stereotypes, regardless of who you are and as such the humor tended to appeal to a broader base.

But things are somehow different now..

I wanted to draw something I would want to read. I wanted to create something more personal to myself. It was with such intention that I started ebget a few weeks ago.

Oh, and another thing. Why have we not seen the advent of more interesting online content while we were gone? We were expecting videos , movies and political tragicomedies made by junior college kids!

Hey, at least we had fun working on this project while we were still in the heart of this education system!

After two years, from what I hear little has changed, and probably so in the future. Who knows, twenty years from now, students in their own time would still be able to relate themselves to Students' Sketchpad.

Personally I'm working on new projects on a different scope from En's. Blogging looks rather obsolete now - perhaps in future the next generation of students who wish to do a project along this line would have newer media to play with. We'll keep the site alive and as it is though, so that you can go through it whenever you want.

You can have a look at our previous issues here. The last entry was around July, in which then we were mugging away for our 'A' levels. Well they are just days away now.

Understandably, our readers may be looking around for other buzzes on the blogosphere in the meantime. Just weeks ago, letters for conscription were quick shortly after our 'A' levels, so we're not pretty sure what's gonna be ahead, perhaps we may have a text-based blog as a substitute in future? (Well, we can't bring the Tablet PC to Tekong, can we?)

It is with regret that we are being held up again at the moment. Hou is struggling to pick up the pieces from his mid-year Common Test results, while En is preparing for it and his Internet connection effectively went bust. :(

In the meantime, we showcase you another piece of fan work from Richard Lee (remember Christmas Special, Continued?) that we received quite a while back :

Crazy things happen during the first three months, such as skipping classes to go on crashing sprees, uniform parades, and mad attempts at jioing girls. ;) Most school stereotypes would also become very obvious as one spot the patterns of students wearing the same secondary school uniforms. Only one thing mattered - that was fun, fun and fun. Richard's sketch pretty much speaks for itself. :D

Unfortunately, the last year the first three months (PAE) would run is 2008, as MOE has decided to scrap it by 2009. It was a period for many of us to really take a break off mugging and have a social life - a lifeskill that you can't learn from books. The generation of students after 2008 will definitely lose out from this. Not to say, the lack of mix between cultures in future would also mean that the stratification of students between different schools will further widen.

To be honest, The Students' Sketchpad wouldn't have existed without the first three months. If there was a time to know a broad group of people with different perspectives, this was the time. Both of us first got known each other during a lecture session, and strangely then the our background interest was on IT/computing, not art!

Our readers must be wondering why there was no entries since early March. We just can't get any issues out at this time due to the current workload - block tests and huge amounts of work load to clear.

Just as we poke fun at our education system, we are the very victims of this same system.

So, let's just say that we're on a mini-hiatus, or end of Season Two. We'll probably be back on cartooning later, although there's no fixed schedule for this.

Dear Sketchpad readers,

We are on a hiatus (temporary break) until 10 October 2005. This is because both of us are mugging away for the upcoming JC1 Promotional Examinations. No new webcomic entries will be produced during this period.

We understand your disappointment in our decision, but we can't really find any spare time to meet up and draw at this time. Neither would we want to compromise the current quality of our webcomic to meet deadlines.

In the meantime though, we'll be just jotting down ideas that may be used for future entries. We also welcome your ideas via email.

We hope that you have enjoyed our webcomic entries so far, and we would like to wish our student readers all the best for their upcoming examinations!

We've decided to experiment something different today. Comic lovers should get a sense of deja-vu for this entry. ;)

The comic and text is relatively smaller than usual, reason being that it's done in the IHarthDarth style.

~~We'll be reducing the frequency of new webcomics to once per fortnight, until after promos. We need time to study for our upcoming promotional exams, ya know!~~

On a side note, while the Singapore blogosphere is experiencing hoo-hahs, I'm beginning to enjoy and appreciate the comparative tranquility here. :)

Legal Issues

We apologise that there was no publication on 24 August 2005. This is due to ~~an attention whore~~ someone sending us with a false legal threat in the form of a comment. We take every legal threat seriously - to do otherwise is to simply play with fire.

Later investigations revealed the perpetrator to be a guy from SAJC, who is hoping that the 'practical joke' he has played would 'help him attract (SCGS?) chicks on a scale he never thought possible.' Records of the incident have since been archived in private.

Bah, one of my friends tell me that the only good AC guys she likes are gay...what a bummer for them.

We update it every Wednesday... so be sure to check... We probably won't have a strip next week due to National Day holidays, we students will be at home enjoying our jingoistic MTVs playing on the air. =P

SCGS girls pleading for a review of their stereotypes have yielded fruit! Now we're saying its the MGS girls who are guilty...yeah, right...and SCGS girls are not. Since some of them are so intent for a image upheaval. However, let me contribute by saying that its only the stereotypes we're actually jacking off at.

Oh btw, its not easy trying to make fun of ACS. Technically, all we know is that they're filthy rich...until the day when we actually have the capability to do a long comic involving ACS boys comtemplating the buying of nuclear weapons and vertu handphones...this idea is pretty bleak. - En

Started in July 2005, the Students' Sketchpad is a webcomic by two students , En & Hou, reflecting the Singapore education system and its schools in a satrical and light-hearted manner.

It is currently produced ~~every Wednesday~~ as and when both cartoonists meet up. The origins of the Students' Sketchpad is a story just simply too long to tell.

Besides the laughter, the webcomic also aims readers to self-reflect, based on their perspective on what is being drawn. The entries also incorporate themes of sociology and philosophy.

Armed with a Tablet PC, all artwork is drawn and coloured digitally. The project gives both cartoonists the opportunity to test out various art techniques from time to time.
