Local Knowledge

It just hit upon me why this webcomic probably can't make it out of Singapore.

Being myself travelling in a different land, with a similiar education system, similiar culture, similiar chio/hot/cute schoolgirls, but having no idea at all on its school stereotypes.

Oppps. Looks like HSBC is right.

P.S. The next two issues will be released on a weekend, due to problems finding a stable Internet connection here. - Hou

Look Again Buster : Our next issue is about that, which is why we ask our readers to take a look at the background information first. :)

A lot of things in Singapore is copied from Hong Kong, that's why it does look very similiar.

Cheers,
Hou

HK school break is only in mid-year... (one long break from june - august if i'm not wrong), so schoolgirls in uniform at this time of year is nothing strange. ;-)

in case people out there are wondering, here's a piece of info for all... not everyone starts the school term like us in jan and end in oct.
for e.g. in many places round the world they are still having school. e.g. taiwan, every new school term starts in september

Tell us how different the systems are? I wanna know! In fact, intellectuals of the world, do a comparative study of world education systems.

Fri Dec 02, 04:39:00 PM GMT+8
Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

The best way to do a comparative study of education systems is to get yourself overseas, be it in an international olympiad or university studying.

In fact, IPHO 2006 is going to be held in SINGAPORE! Volunteer your services and be paid back in terms of experience (and of course slight unworthy monetary compensation) Go there and take to the best (well, sort of) from each country, and learn! This is perhaps the closest most of you would ever get to an International Olympiad.

Well, apart from the mentioned time scheduling (many countries start in August, have summer holidays), theres also Breath and Depth of knowledge, NATIONAL SERVICE, levels of school, focus etc.

Breath/Depth
Singapore manages quite a well mix of both. China, Japan, Korea tend to go to extremes on breath and depth.

Canada has taken integration out of the syllabus (lets forestall an argument abt syllabi) Imagine that! Their students suffer in Uni.

Most americians cannot function without a Graphing calculator.

Level of Schools
Certainly, what you learn in primary, secondary, tertiary education varies across the country.

I think P1 in Singapore only learn hanyupinyin, correct me if im wrong.

My maths prof insists that when told to find the distance between 1 and 2, a 2nd grade student should ask 'On what Metric, SIR?' and offer the correct ans ln 2

China students (in a certain school) only learn trigonometric functions when in high school (J1 equivalent)

Focus
Asian countries tend to focus more on rote memorization (tang shi san bai shou) whilst leaving application to the later part of education.

As a result, (i feel) they lose out on creativity and originality (compare mad russian Scientist with mad chinese Scientist)

Americians tend to be more spread out in their learning, hence liberal arts colleges.

NATIONAL SERVICE
What does this have to do with education?

Well, the very fact that you lose 2.5 years of your life means that you can legally buy alcohol in US. Hence, you feature a big role in the alcoholism problem in US schools.

And being older, your view of the world changes. You laugh at those foolishly entagled in ugly BGR/BBR/GGR, while curse your sufference in creativity. Pros and cons

Korean and Taiwan also have National Service, both 2 years (now that sg has reduced commitment level) They tend to go NS after uni though.

Alright, enough said. Time to go back to my essay. Are virtues teachable?

Sat Dec 03, 06:21:00 AM GMT+8
Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

Virtues teachable? Is tat framed correctly in the first place and should it even be asked. For sure it cn be taught but will it be practised and kept. That cld be a better angle to the issue.

Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

the actual question is 'how strong is Protagoras' case in the Protagoras for the teachability of virtue'

and yes, im taking that angle

PUTNAM!
