The Students' Notebook is now launched on a trial basis. This project is a academic journal covering educational issues, and has a few additional contributors other than ourselves.More stuff will be gradually coming up soon - We hope to interest readers in what we write, as much as we have done so in our drawings. :)

Congratulations on such a noble endeavour. As I recall, there was one commenter on "GEPers repent!" with many diverse, colourful and opinionated views on social theory and public policy in general, and took the time and effort to spread out his entries over a large number of comments and replies to myself and my fellow GEPs. Is he a part of this also? It would be interesting indeed.
But all the best - and hopefully it shall not turn into a bitching centre (like other forums) or a place for people to showcase their intellectual prowess (like a certain *cough* mailing list).
Well well well. If this isn't the forum juz cut out for me, I don't know wat else is.
Let us first discuss wat is on today's newspapers (THE STRAITS TIMES).
It had a write-up on students spending their holidays in a foreign land usually on some adventure trip or community or immersion program
This is usually for a select cohort.
I am not begrudging this select group anything. But I am not sure if the same experience cannot be had in Singapore.
Schools remain the custodians of education in the academic arts and sports disciplines. Anything beyond its basic functions could be farmed out commercially or voluntarily.
After all there is no shortage of outside expertise such as the PA, SSC or NAC who could volunteer their resources for outreach programs.
I am a firm believer in charity at home first before we even embark on any overseas mission to build homes for the poor, etc.
Case in point, the two elderly sisters living in a bug-ridden house. We start here and then we move abroad only when we have the surplus funding.
I think this shld be the philosophy we all begin with.

To GEP 2000 alumni, I am glad we now have this forum to thrash out issues of the day either about schools or otherwise.
I wholeheartedly agree that other issues could be discussed but we want to avoid as far as possible navel-gazing ones like who is dating who where and why OR if XY has a Motorola Razer Gold edition or a pink or black one even though this did pique my interest a little in the consumerism sense as I am scouting for a new phone at the moment.
Thus I suppose we can discuss anything under the sun but hopefully geared towards more issues of education, public policies, economics, social, maybe even political....(Singapore Gestapo is on the webby)
By the way , what mailing list?
Let me rephrase that slightly.
Schools are the custodians for basic and general academic, arts and sports education.
For specialised education in these niche areas, we have the sports school and NAFA but not yet a liberal arts school.
For immersion , communitity and adventure camps overseas, I am not totally convinced of its merits or necessity.
Smacks of using public funds for holiday fun.
They can always do an immersion program with the international schools here. We have a huge American, Australian and Canadian presence here.
Adventure camps such as the OBS should be as good as any abroad.
Community programs can be done in areas not yet ventured. For starters, they could make a foray into the 1, 2 and 3 room apartments and see how ghetto living is first hand.
Or the shophouses area where the poor and dereclicts are.
I say begin at home and with surplus funds, we could go abroad.

I mean seriously isn't it still the exam and academic grades, as the system now stands, which determines our fate?
Unless this is changing anytime soon, academic attention is of paramount importance.
If the teachers cannot deliver as much within their time and syllabi curriculum as they claim to be overburdened (which accounts for the shadow education system), then farm this out to service providers who can provide the service at the school's doorsteps.
At least this do-or-die function which is the determinant of life's success, is firstly and priorly taken care of over and before all others such as sports and arts.
Then this is fair to all students that their FATE is at least as good as assured.

In fact, at the HDB HUB, near where I live for now, there are mendicants suffering from an array of physical and medical disabilities.
We can start helping them first and then we move off to some community projects in the world.

We are overtly concern abt image. A Chinese (Asian) thingy abt face? So we wanna look to be "internationally sympathetic" and thus absolved of international swipe at us being selfish, inward, etc.
I say to hell with this. We take care of our domestic issues like community programs even b4 we consider moving onto the international arena.
It is like being gay in school but coz all yer straight frens are having steads, you have to jump right in to show u r one of the guys too.

however, for a discusion forum, i personally think LiveJournal would be better, coz of the format, and how the comments are posted.
but, seeing how the site is already up, it doesnt really matter :)
