Interlude

It is with regret that we are being held up again at the moment. Hou is struggling to pick up the pieces from his mid-year Common Test results, while En is preparing for it and his Internet connection effectively went bust. :(

In the meantime, we showcase you another piece of fan work from Richard Lee (remember Christmas Special, Continued?) that we received quite a while back :

Remember the 1st 3 months? - The craze with Mass Dance - The Daring and Sometimes Crazy People - Uniform X-Change & Cross Dressing - Super-Enthu Cheerleaders - Pon School - Crashing Schools - Scholars or Muggers - The Quiet Ones - The Mandarin Ducks - The Very Enthu Event Manager - OG Outing! - Late-Comers - Propaganda - Ultra-Strict Teachers

Crazy things happen during the first three months, such as skipping classes to go on crashing sprees, uniform parades, and mad attempts at jioing girls. ;) Most school stereotypes would also become very obvious as one spot the patterns of students wearing the same secondary school uniforms. Only one thing mattered - that was fun, fun and fun. Richard's sketch pretty much speaks for itself. :D

Unfortunately, the last year the first three months (PAE) would run is 2008, as MOE has decided to scrap it by 2009. It was a period for many of us to really take a break off mugging and have a social life - a lifeskill that you can't learn from books. The generation of students after 2008 will definitely lose out from this. Not to say, the lack of mix between cultures in future would also mean that the stratification of students between different schools will further widen.

To be honest, The Students' Sketchpad wouldn't have existed without the first three months. If there was a time to know a broad group of people with different perspectives, this was the time. Both of us first got known each other during a lecture session, and strangely then the our background interest was on IT/computing, not art!

Oh, and do share your experience of first three months with us too! - Hou

I'm digging the sketch, it's pretty awesome. Pity that they're going to scrap it soon though.

IMO, first three months are probably the best three months of JC life, found it pretty hard to leave mine for another, but I guess it had to be.

The gate-crashing group says the most about me ;D

sad to see PAE go. first three months is one of the most eventful period of time in JC and one for deciding what subjects to take....

Maybe with PAE gone, one have to make better choices (institutions or subjects) next time.

and I rather wear my sec sch uni then to wear the present cursed jc uni =P

I wasted my PAE by being too obedient so nothing much except for 'visiting' other JCs heh.

Mixing with people from other schools proved to be a great experience too.

Thanks to En & Hou for posting this up and hope you all enjoy the cartoon.

Ah, the first three months. It was an eye-opening period, being able to mix and mingle with students from all sorts of secondary schools, many I've never heard of before. >D It's an even bigger eye-opener for me cos' i was in a all-boys secondary schools, so meeting girls in the same class again is really something. :-p

Nevertheless, I've made great friends from different backgrounds. I still think my PAE class rocks. Like he said, there are things you can never learn or experience through books. If you like me don't know how to relate to people of different backgrounds and opposite gender before, JC is the time to learn.

Yep, it's a pity that the PAE has to be scrapped. But from the viewpoint of MOE and schools, it's the only way to reclaim those 'precious' three months of schooling. Future JC students can benefit too, since they won't have to go through the painful 'seperation' after JAE.

To any secondary school student reading my ranting, I have an adivce for you;
You may not have the three months of 'honeymoon' anymore :( , but by all means, go make friends and have lots of fun anyway.

i dont know....for some of us 2nd intakers the whole 1st 3 months thing was awful. not being to adapt to a new sch culture, much changes in subjects, being unable to catch up academically for the rest of the year, never really fitting in with the new class, the old class disintegrated, yes it was fun for 3 months, but at what cost? for the rest of jc life i was paying for the aftershocks of the 1st 3 months. its something those who didnt change sch will never understand.

in fact i had hoped my sister wouldnt have to go through the same system. one of my friend had such a terrible time coping she came down with depression and went on medication....i hope nobody else would ever have to go through what we did again. and if it means no more PAE, im all for it.

I am one of the lucky batch to have PAE. When it was first announced to be scrapped, one thing that immediately struck in my head was that my batch of '05 O level takers were affected. But in mid april last year it was said that PAE is to be resumed until 2009. So lucky... but...

Anyway 1st 3 months is a nightmare to me instead of fun. i went to innova JC because meridian JC rejected my appeal. The whole orientation was screwed up. No mass dance. Games all boring type. No team building activities. Everything sucks there. People formerly from my OG lost contact of each other within a weekend after the orientation. There are a lot of loners around there too(Thankfully I aint a loner). I just wonder if IJC has an orientation just for the sake of it. but there's still sort of fun there... played poker behind street soccer court, vandalised the school property there. Last day of PAE I spat at the main gate of IJC ^^

Till now I still think that my orientation at the sch that i am posted to for JAE is still better than PAE. Most of the schools have only 3 days of orientation but my school has a 3 day 2 night camp which I really enjoyed. Till now, I am still in contact with my OG mates of Orientation 2. Overall it's quite a meaningful orientation which i probably will never forget...

(sounds familiar? No prizes for guessing my current JC correctly XD)

my first three months at CJ sucked ass. a class torn apart by love triangles, a deranged sex-crazed form teacher, everyone in the same damn t-shirt, a best friend who was not allowed to go out (!)...but i would not have exchanged it for the world. Had some incredible first-time experiences, got a lot of stories to tell and got a crash course how to deal with guys (after 10 yrs in a girls' school) knowing i'd never see them again after the first 3 months coz no one really stayed in CJ in those days.

then i got into AC as a second-intaker and spent the rest of the year with other second-intakers bitching about how we could never seem to fit in. ah well.

rarrghh. my first three months was in 2005, fresh from secondary school into intimidating acjc.

but i had a ball of a time- learning the a-b-c backwards (zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba) during boring lectures and tutorials; exchanging uniforms and all that. too bad singapore aims too 'effective' and cost/time saving. i really pity the younger kids. :(
