First of all. I wish to offer my thanks to the following people, both dead and alive, for using their visages in the strip.:D

Burt Lancaster
Emmy Rossum
Ava Gardner
Richard Widmark
Karl Malden
Ronald Reagan
Al Pacino
Paul Newman

Thanks Z and acdude, I wrote this series, and I am not en or hou. That explains why this strip is different. :)

Glad my efforts have paid off. I have been watching a LOT of black and white gangster movies/noirs to get a feel of the dialogue and plot, if you like this story, it is recommended that you watch these movies:

THE KILLERS (1946)
CRISS CROSS (1949)
NIGHT AND THE CITY (1950)
PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET (1953)
SCARFACE (1983)
ROAD TO PERDITION (2002)

VJCian, this is continued from the previous week. Do follow this story. This is as close to Hollywood as Students Sketchpad has gotten yet. :D

Well my dear Rafflesian, it was just a wry way of saying that the ACSian villain of this story realized that his girlfriend just called the plumber way, way too often so she could let him drink her homemade lemonade, see?

Sun Feb 05, 08:40:00 PM GMT+8
Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah. my sentiments exactly! the whole vibe that's coming from the strip is VERY VERY dick tracy-ish, sin city-ish and mafia-type-ish. definitely one of the best and most intriguing comic styles.

Meh, the rafflesian asking that the ACS dude die (Come on, suspense exists for a reason) and asking what golden taps meant came off rather amusing to me.

The story is very good thus far, but I'm quite curious as to how long En and Hou are going to have this series going. I'm rather certain a compromise will occur and the story's going to end rather abruptly, or it's going to drag on really long. Well, I guess I'm going to be surprised quite pleasantly how this turns out, I hope.

Anyway, good work thus far on the comic, we all appreciate a change every once in a while, unless it involves Tablet PCs getting damaged. =\

Okay, throughglassdarkly here for a breakdown of the story so far, we told it in flashback chronological order, so here the story goes:

1. Saint Joe boy Xavier was a down on his luck plumber a few years ago before he was in the gang, and one day he received a call from Giselle, the singer of the Yin Yang Club.

2. They met, they had an affair. But the truth was that Giselle's boyfriend was the evil wheeling-dealing ACSian of Unknown name. (More on him in future).

3. The ACSian gets mad, he kills Father O'Brien, and three of Xavier's friends.

4. Xavier goes to his Godfather, goes on a rampage and enters the den of the Chinese mob to smoke out the ACSian.

Is it any coincidence that the girl's dressed all in blue like *ahem* a certain school.

Sun Feb 05, 11:38:00 PM GMT+8
Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hurr,

Chink is an insulting word for a Chinese person. Since the story is set in a make-believe 1950s America, such phrases would be expressive of attitudes at the time.

anonymous,
I don't think the girl's dress sense is anything more than a coincidence. After all, part of the appeal of Sin City is the way Frank Miller uses "trademark colours" for certain characters eg. the Yellow Bastard. In this case of course, my guess is that it's "the Girl in Blue".

Finally! Waited so long for this, but I suppose it was worth the wait. :) Love the not-so-direct humour.

Fellow Annonymous, good point! I didn't think of that.

Rafflesian:

I assume "golden taps" is sort of saying:

Golden - rich (which is associated with ACSians)

Taps - Plumbing.

Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

oh man to those who dont get the point.

the girl in blue is a damm scgs girl. xavier's a josephian. with all the irish roots. and the ACSian and Xavier fighting over the girl in blue.

Anonymous, the style that this is done in is called Noir. Has its roots in German Expressionism. In the immediate postwar Hollywood cinema a lot of films were dark and shady like this and told stories of criminals, doomed love affairs and generally the darker side of life. Some good examples I have listed above. Sin City is of course another good example.

Anyway, MORE familiar looking folks might appear, so keep your eyes peeled. ;)

reading this i can't help but think this plot's familiar.

desperate housewives plot,

gabrielle had a secret affair with her gardener - teenage boy named john. all this happened when carlos (her husband) was out closing shady business deals.
need i add that they're rich people?

neat piece of work, must definitely laud the quality of the drawings over the dialogue.

it's a pretty good comic, but definitely something not your studentssketchpad audience is looking for. you should set up an alternate blog for such kind of non-humor comics or you'll lose all your audience.

p.s. it only rocks when it's moving; i.e. a video or movie and it's pretty dull when it's a comic.

Xuanchuan, and all those that STILL don't get it, this strip basically follows the formula of mocking school stereotypes that the strip always has. Except that it recreates the schools and student types as warring gangs and criminals in an imaginary America somewhere either in the 40s or 50s.

The fun-loving, drink-happy, rugby-playing, Roman Catholic Josephian becomes the whisky-swilling Irish Catholic gangster. The materialistic, manipulative SCGS girl becomes the high-maintenance, super-conniving femme fatale, and the businesslike, sharply-dressed ACS guy is the unscrupulous smuggler. HCI becomes the Chinese triad that owns a nightclub called the "Huang Cheng" (sounds like a nightclub name, don't it?), because if you watch all those Hongkie films like KUNG FU HUSTLE the Shanghai mob always owns nightclubs.

The whole point of this strip is that you have to take note of all the details to realize what the creators are making fun of.

There's a term for what a bunch of guys get up to together. It's called "talking cock". The contents therein can be the most offensive stuff on the face of the planet, and it's still ok. And don't pretend that those of the female persuasion don't get up to it too. Who knows, they might be even better at it than we are. There's no reason that they get a free pass with their gal pals while guys have to watch what they're saying.

Anonymous,

I've seen a couple of them, especially the later ones. There were a few which I saw in film theory classes as well.

The most recent film noir that played in Singapore was The Ice Harvest, which opened around Christmas last year.

http://cinewhore.blogspot.com/2006/01/have-yourself-bloody-little-christmas.html

But one of the most visually and thematically stunning noirs I've seen in recent years has to be the Coen Brothers' "The Man Who Wasn't There". It's perfect.

And throughglassdarkly, I'm wondering how old you are. It'd be a rare JC student with your knowledge and love of the genre.

Cinewhore.

Try getting Library@Esplanade premium membership, it's the best. At 50 bucks a year you can get up to four flicks a week. That was in fact how I saw most of my listed films.

BTW, cinewhore, can you give me your email address...then we can communicate directly.

Lol nice art! When you include raffles students, though, I hope you don't make them seem stereotypical again. We're not like that, really. (Ok, perhaps only some of us)

AC boy dont so offensive lah!

Acs boys are not dumb and neither are rafflesians nerdy. So what is the point of insulting each other?

I'm starting to think that your stories are absoulte nonsense. Your stories are supposed to be "deep", when they're abstract beyond comprehension. Just like picasso and his cubist art.

The art is lovely, and the whole 'gangsta' feel of it really comes through...and amuses me to no end. Love the poking at the different schools, as usual, and the dialogue is really, really IC for the different characters you're supposed to be portraying. So hats off to throughglassdarkly for that!

*grins* And again, the whole gangsta-AU concept is really cool and also sidesplittingly hilarious.

Thanks!

Call me out of date, but what do "IC" and "AU" mean?

Hey can somebody applejack the retard rafflesian who posted comment no. 5?

Sun Feb 26, 10:45:00 PM GMT+8
Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ah..sorry. IC means In-Character (for the parts they were supposed to portray, anyway) and AU means Alternate-Universe.

There aren't any Rafflesians in there because they're all government officials, and as we all know government officials from RI don't associate themselves with the dregs of society.

Cheers.
