The humour here is very subtle. This is really just the Evil SCGS girl joke in the first issue carried to the extreme.

The focus is about recreating the schools of Singapore as warring gangs in an imaginary 1950s America.

HCI---the Chinese triads

River Valley---the Chinatown bookies/money launderers

SJI---The Irish Catholic Mob

SCGS---Evil manipulative femmes fatales

St Nicks---Stoolpigeons and information traders (gossip queens)

NJC---Nazi Jaguar Corps. Note the initials.

The Funorama---A casino in Atlantic City, note the initials of "Atlantic City".

Comrade Anonymous Anonymous said...

now it is me or does the chinese triad boss look a tad like chow yun fatt?

nice work on the storyline though somr of the abbreviations could be better done. we need more of such 'side-stories' to keep this site interesting. alternating between the normal satires and these would be a nice touch.

well done.

Comrade Blogger throughglassdarkly said...

You got it, the joke is that everyone in the strip has a movie star, past or present as a visual model...

Xavier----Burt Lancaster
Cedric----Robert Stack
Giselle----Emmy Rossum
The ACSian----Richard Widmark
Triad Boss----Chow Yun Fatt
General Alwin----Paul Scofield
Sam----Kirsten Dunst
Chef Mou----Ge You

A plot summary will be up later for those who can't follow it...

hci chinese drama as the gangster boss... creative. But since he is from HCI, shouldn't he say everything in Mandarin?

Mon Feb 27, 04:10:00 PM GMT+8
Comrade Blogger throughglassdarkly said...

Anonymous, I was thinking of that, but realized that to have a really cool Chinese gangster boss, he would have to speak great English too. A bilingual and super cultured man who also works his plans from behind the scenes. After all, Wallenquist from "Sin City" is "The Kraut" (German) but he speaks English too.

Anyway, here is the plotline for those who STILL can't get it. This is told in chronologically linear form, but the strip is not chronologically linear and uses flashbacks.

Another reader has explained the relationship between the schools and gangs already, so look it up.

Xavier is a member of the St Joe Boys, an Irish Catholic gang. A few years ago he took a job as a plumber when he was destitute and fell in love with Giselle, the evil girl who sings at the Yin Yang Club, who seduced him. Her boyfriend though was the ACSian, a smuggler who up till now, has made his trade mostly in cocaine. However, bad girl Giselle is also the daughter of Colonel Graham, a late bigshot involved in some kind of matters of national security and intelligence, and she has helped to get out her father's secret: a list of covert agents, so that her boyfriend can sell it to numerous clients including the Chinese triads, Nazis etc. for a fortune. Xavier does not know this and wants to save her after she makes up lies to him about being mistreated. So he gets carte blanche from his Boss to exact his revenge, upsetting the balance of power between gangs.

Using information from a stoolie(women who sell information within the underworld). He crashes a deal that the ACSian is about to make with the Chinese triads, which startles the Chinese triad boss who realizes that his brothers (the victims) were trying to cut a deal with someone he considered unsavory. (After all, he can sell anything, just not cocaine.) The Chinese triad boss has also had eyes on Giselle for a while and decides to use this chance to get her. With the police in his pocket, he uses the ongoing investigations as a means to interfere.

Det. Cedric Griffin, a rogue cop that has no problem hanging out with crooks because he is a high school pal of Xavier's, has been on the case of the ACSian for a while and has caught on that he might be selling something else other than cocaine, which is national secrets. Therefore he gladly gets Xavier to join him on a raid to where he has heard the ACSian would start a deal next: with some ex-Nazis seeking to build the Fourth Reich.

However, after a smooth start where the Nazis are rounded up and resistance put down, Cedric and Xavier realize they have been double-crossed. The Commissioner, who is in the pocket of the Chinese triad boss, turns on them, paving the way for the Chinese triad boss to get Giselle, who has by now killed her boyfriend in a quarrel.

The Chinese triad boss and Giselle go to Atlantic City for a nice weekend in the Funorama Hotel...and there he wonders if she really loves him, or if he is really her next victim...

And that's the storyline.

Not blatantly amusing. You really have to read everything. Which I didn't, because my eyes hurt from reading all that text. But the references to all those schools(even JCs!) amused me quite a bit. Especially the evil SCGS girl with her steadily sexier getups.

Seriously well done. One of the better web comics I have read in awhile. I especially liked how you guys blended an American style of comic writing and presentation with Singaporean school sterotypes. Bravo. I must agree that the humor here is very subtle, in fact, its so subtle that most people cant pick it up. And that wasnt meant as an insult, to anyone. BTW, do you guys take art or something? Again, well done.

I enjoyed the series, especially the references and fantastic artwork. Its a pity that many readers of this blog might not be able to appreciate the unobvious, possibly because of its different style and apparently rushed storyline. I couldn't get half of the story till ThroughGlassDarkly explained it, besides the obvious references and stereotype portrayal. Perhaps for future instalments that brink on the "multiple cheem references" style like this one, a summary on the story with glossary for reference would be good.

Also, whats with the NJC being nazis? just because they're NATIONAListic? Don't quite see the stereotypical link here.

And i'd like that post of actors and actresses too. =)

I'm going be a feels like you guys are like going 'Oh thats cool lets put it in!' without proper thought to how it fits as a story.

The graphics are fine if a little lacking in informing detail in certain places. Your problems lie with the story telling.

1) Narrative structure: Think about your symbols, what they are saying and how it fits together.

Besides the artwork, the snap changes in viewpoint from issue to issue (and even within the issues) make for a very disjointed narrative.

2)Less is more: too many words and links leading nowhere. Keep it tight, its a webcomic not a novel.

3)A jokes not funny if you have to explain it. (in this case you sometimes become the joke.)

You guys have taken the task of both expanding youselves visually and content-wise. Seriously, well done. The challenge is not leaving your readers behind. Its not going to be overnight so All the best!

Oh stay awake in Lit, esp E1, its amazing what you can learn if you think visually. :)

good foray into the world of dark humour and subtlety, unfortunately three strips with about 30 frames isn't enough to bring out a full story that you so ambitiously undertook during the first strip. the last strip was a huge rush to tie up everything, and it turned out less than good.

and people who are kaobeh-ing about the change in tone, it's intellectual humour. chill. even though i enjoy the film noir spoof, i do think the simple stuff was more enjoyable to a wider audience. and you can tell them you thought so too, but for goodness sake don't tell the cartoonists what to do or demand. it's their strip, they can do what they damn well like with it. sheesh.

suffice to say the moral of the story is don't screw with the girls in blue. ((whatever it takes to reach the top, better watch out, 'cause we're not gonna stop. so there. *shameless pride* ...i embarass myself, i know.))

I do agree with L-inc tho, about how you need improvement in the flow and panelling of the story. The story is innovative and refreshing but you have to keep in mind the flow storytelling through the medium of a comic. School's calling, mebe i'll add more comments once exam's over. ^_^

Good luck! keep up the experimenting! ^_^

i prefer the old style...more comical.its getting a little over-dramatic dont u think.anyway the HWI logo on the dudes shirt was a really nice touch and i was laughing like crazy when i saw it.perhaps an inclusion for neighbour school fairfield is in the cards?

I think that blue dress was totally awesome.Unfortunately,if SC had such a uniform,we'd be sued for indecent exposure.I mean...seriously...but I like the dress!Btw,the comic was really well drawn. It seemed like those kind of real comics you can find in the NLB or something.

i feel that you shouldnt play around with words or anything. i can hurt ties between schools. oh ad btw, i feel that the comics drawn are rather ugly and untidy. pls give better work quality. and its really causing people's eyes to bleed. you dont want that t happen right ? so please. improve.ahh, pls dont insult too. cos i dont think your insults funny or interesting. OLD.

LOL. Wow, I absolutely LOVE. IT. And your art is simply brilliant; I don't understand how people can say it looks "rushed" or messy! I think the sketchy feel gives it a casual edge that I personally really like! And the story is imaginative and funny. And AHAHAHA BONUS POINTS for the last panel, which is simply the funniest thing I've ever seen xD Thank you ever so much for breaking out of your typical style to send us this. The shadows and the different perspectives you used are really, truly... I AM BLOWN AWAY. All right, I will stop um ranting on now. THIS WAS AWESOME. HONESTLY.

(AND all the best for your As. ^ ^ I took a break from studying for mine to read these because it looked so impressive :D)

i think this comic series was good - but perhaps it was too great a deviation from your usual stuff and too dependent on the storylines from the sin city comics though.
